White CCTV 1

What is CCTV?

Get the basics right first

At its core, a collection of cameras connected to a central point. The basic functions all systems should fulfill are:

  • View the live view of all the cameras
  • View the recordings from all the cameras
  • Download recordings
  • Remote access to the recorder

Why do we need CCTV?

  • Security – a deterrent for any would-be criminals
  • Security – evidence for any criminals caught in the act
  • Protect staff from certain guests
  • Heatmap busy areas
  • Spot queuing (seamlessly direct for staff to get the queue gone)
  • People counting
  • Reunite lost items with their owners
  • Legal/license requirements

Can’t anyone do it?

It depends on the quality of the system you want. Ask yourself the following:

  • Do I want to view a recording and ask myself “is it a bird? is it a plane? Oh… nope it’s Bob taking the bins out”
  • Do I want to turn my head sideways to get the image straight

If you answered yes… then yes anyone can do it. If you answered no, there are a few things to consider.

Things to consider

  • What areas need covering
  • Why do those areas need covering?
  • What image quality do you want?
  • Do you want to be alerted to potential intruders?
  • How long do you want or need to keep the footage for?
  • Who needs access to the system and why?
